Tired of the conflict? There is a way to co-parent peacefully with a personality disordered individual. Unlock the secrets here.

Today, we address a common misconception: the assertion that co-parenting with a narcissistic or personality-disordered individual is impossible. This is demonstrably false. I have successfully guided numerous clients in this context, and I will outline effective strategies.

It is acknowledged that personality disordered individuals can induce significant stress. However, their behaviors are unlikely to change. The key lies in modifying your own approach. You cannot alter their behavior, but you can control your reactions.

Here are three actionable strategies:

  1. Detached Engagement:

    • Narcissistic or personality-disordered individuals may employ disparaging language via text, email, or phone.

    • Avoid engaging in arguments, as this reinforces their desired dynamic.

    • Establish clear boundaries: "Please refrain from personal attacks. I will not engage in communication under these circumstances. Contact me when you are prepared to communicate respectfully."

    • Maintain consistency in enforcing these boundaries.

    • Respond constructively to respectful communication.

    • Address any personal anger that may fuel engagement

  1. Boundary Maintenance:

    • Establish and maintain clear boundaries regarding communication.

    • Control your response timing, except in genuine emergencies.

    • Delay responses to allow for emotional processing, reducing impulsive reactions.

  1. Acknowledged Communication:

    • Acknowledge, rather than disregard, their communication.

    • Respond neutrally: "Thank you for your input. I will consider it and respond later." This acknowledges their communication without engaging in conflict.

These strategies, implemented consistently, can significantly reduce stress when co-parenting with a narcissistic or personality-disordered individual.

Remember, consistency is key. While perfection is unattainable, sustained effort will yield positive results.
